Manufacturing

In these days of pets getting sick and frequent pet food recalls, it can be hard for consumers to decide which company to trust. Imported pet foods have become suspect, and many Americans are choosing to buy made in America products exclusively.

Canidae is manufactured in United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved plants. Every ingredient that goes into their products must undergo testing to make sure that they are not tainted. This, according to the company, assures the safety of the animals that are being fed the Canidae brand.

Ingredients

The Canidae Company uses ingredients that are graded for human consumption. Some of the ingredients that are used in the dog food are:

  • Chicken, lamb and turkey that are hormone and antibiotic free.
  • Fish meal that is FDA tested.
  • Brown rice, white rice and rice bran that are guaranteed pesticide free.
  • Oatmeal, millet and barley that are USDA grade #1, the same as you would find on the grocery shelves.

Complaints About Canidae Dog Food

Recently the Canidae Company changed the formula of their dog food with out letting customers know. There have been many complaints about the switch to the new formula.

The company added several new ingredients and removed other ingredients in the various formulas. Dog owners reported that within a short period of time, sometimes within hours, of feeding their dogs the new formulas, the dogs became very ill.

Some of the symptoms reported were:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Bloody, loose stools
  • Vomiting blood
  • Bloating
  • Dehydration
  • Hives
  • Flaking skin
  • Lethargy

Other customers, some of them long time users of Canidae, reported that the representatives that they had talked to at customer service were difficult, uncaring or unhelpful. Many customers reported leaving messages that were never returned. Most of these angry consumers have changed to another brand of dog food.

Always Speak to Your Vet

Before making any kind of change in your pet's diet, always speak to your vet. He can guide you to the best foods and formulas for your pet, and give you advice on how to make the change to the new food.

When changing your dog's food, always do so very gradually, introducing the new food a little at a time over the period of time suggested by your veterinarian, usually about ten to fourteen days..

Hi Nancy,

Thanks for sharing your comments too. The last couple of comments before your own are from late summer and autumn of 2008.

since there are no dates on any of these comments, I have no idea what the time frame of these comments is,but we were told by our store, Benson's, late summer '08, I believe, that there had been a change in the grain to millet. Our Chocolate lab had no trouble changing. Maybe some distibutors or store were not informed or thought it was no big deal. Also some dogs are more sensitive than others.
