Ads for Free Puppies

From LoveToKnow Dogs

Ads for free puppies can lead you to your next special pet. Maybe there isn't an animal shelter near you, but you still want to take in a pet that might not otherwise find a home. Ads in your local paper and posted at various locations around town can help you locate dogs that might be available for adoption in your area.

Where to Find Ads for Free Puppies

There are many different places where you can find ads for free puppies. It's a good idea to search them all when looking for the perfect pooch for your family.

Newspaper

Probably the best source for finding free puppies in your area is the local newspaper and the free weekly newspapers in your area. Almost every newspaper in America has a pets section. Just browse until you find the listings for puppies being offered for free. You'll likely find many different types of dogs, from mixed breeds to some of the most popular breeds of dogs, but perhaps without paperwork.

Bulletin Boards

Another source for free puppies is bulletin boards around your town. Here are a few places where you'll find bulletin boards with flyers:

  • The library
  • Laundromats
  • Post office
  • Grocery stores
  • Local businesses

Vet's Office

Your veterinarian's office can be a great source for finding free puppies. Often, owners will place ads in the office or let the vet know they are seeking a home for their pups. Simply phone or stop in, and ask the vet if he knows of any free puppies available. This is also a good time to ask him about breeds and temperaments that would be a good match for your family.

Online

You can easily start your search for a free puppy online. Many ASPCA and rescue shelters offer inexpensive adoption services and free online listings. If you are looking for a particular breed, online searches can be particularly helpful. If you're willing to take an older puppy or young adult dog, you'll likely have even more success finding the particular breed you want. Here are a few websites you might find helpful in your search:

Questions to Ask When You Phone About the Ad

There are a few things to consider when deciding whether your family is ready to take on a free puppy. Here are some questions you should ask:

  • Have the puppies had any of their shots and been examined by a vet? This question is particularly important if you have other pets in the home. The last thing you want is an animal that has been exposed to distemper or another deadly virus to bring it into your home.
  • Have the puppies been dewormed recently? While this shouldn't be a deal breaker, it will allow you to know if you need to get medication right away or if you can wait a while and have the vet test the pup's stool sample.
  • How many weeks old are the puppies?
  • How many were in the litter?
  • Are they used to children and people? A socialized puppy is usually better behaved than one that hasn't been properly socialized.
  • Have the owners started any type of potty training? If they are training the puppy to go outside and you want a paper trained dog, this might not be compatible.
  • What type of food are they currently feeding the puppy? It is best not to switch foods and if you do switch, do so gradually.

You'll Still Need to Pay For…

Even if you find a free puppy, remember that you'll need to pay for booster shots, spaying or neutering and regular vet check ups. Puppies require special care and training, so be prepared for those costs by phoning a vet ahead of time and getting a list of which services your new dog will need in the first year and what the price will be..

Hi Carla,

I think your best option would be to check out a breed rescue. Try checking out SaintRescue.org, and they may be able to help you find a Saint Bernard rescue group closer to your location.

Best wishes. :)
