I was wondering if anyone makes any special homemade dog treats or special foods for their dogs? My three love chicken soup and a peanut and oatmeal doggie drop cookies. I was going to put the recipe but wasn’t sure if it is allowed.

Do you have a link to the recipe online or the place where you found it?

Hi Debbie - I think I originally got the recipe from one of the pet cookbooks. I have to try to find it and I will post it if that is ok. Some of the treat recipes can be shared by cats and by people too!  grin

Probably better if you just post the name of the book—don’t want any authors to be upset smile

I actually have a copy of Wendy Nan Rees’ Natural Pet Food Cookbook. It has a lot of recipes for dogs and cats. It’s co-written with a veterinarian, and it even has guidelines for how much to feed your pets based on their size. It has recipes for everything from kibble to stews and loaves. Honestly, you could eat the food in these recipes yourself, and they are quite tempting, lol.

Hi,

With my pet she cannot have treats like other dogs, but what I do is buy chicken breasts, remove any fat, bake them, slice about 1/4 in thick, put in food dehyrator and there you go 100% chicken treats.  I don’t trust the ones sold anymore, besides they are too expensive.

I know there are some receipes for dogs treats on allrecipes site, but don’t know about copyright laws etc.

Plain canned pumpkin by teaspoonfuls frozen makes a good treat, good for constipation also and I know a gal who makes treats from sweet potatoes, matter of fact I have saw these sold.

Hope this helps with the chicken treats.

I love the chicken breast treat tip. I’m going to have to try that one. I don’t have a dehydrator, but do you think it will work if I just dry them out in a low oven until they have a jerky kind of texture. I know I’d have to freeze whatever I didn’t use immediately because this probably won’t remove as much moisture as the dehydrator would, but I think it could work.

Hi Kelly,
Sorry it took me a day or two to get back here. Yes you can use the oven on low heat maybe at 100 a bit warmer than just the pilot light on. I make sure mine is crisp and will break with a snap like sound.

They would keep a week in a glass jar in the fridge. Oh, I’d also put the cooked chicken pieces on a cake rack etc then lay that on top of the cookie sheet for the oven.

Hi Calla - Thanks for the great treat ideas! I also don’t have a dehydrator but I am going to make them the chicken treats in the oven. I know my dogs will love them! But they’ll have to share them with the feline side of the family   LOL

LOL, I never thought a cat would eat a jerky treat, I have a stray I have been feeding all winter, but now I think the cat is eating the wild game available since the weather broke. Don’t know if the cat is male or female, but the cat is hanging around with another stray who looks like a little lion.

How did I miss this thread? I sometimes take hot dogs and slice them up. Then I put them on a paper plate and cover with a piece of paper towel. Microwave for several minutes, stirring around occasionally until they are totally dry.

They smell kinda yucky to me but the dogs love them. They make good training treats too. In fact, it was a trainer who told me how to make them. It’s what she used for training all her dogs.
