Hi all, A friend of mine lost her little dog a couple of years ago, because he ran out when some trick or treaters came to the door and got hit by a car. I just wanted to remind everyone that it is probably best to put dogs away in another room or at the very least have a leash on them while trick or treaters are visiting and also to keep any chocolate up as it is very toxic to dogs. Everyone have a safe and Happy Halloween! |

Those are great reminders Lori. We simply can’t pass out candy at home because the two younger Russells will bark like crazy and try to run out the door. We did a Trunk or Treat event at our church last weekend so we could pass out candy without the extra worry. My daughter also left her candy bag on the table next to the couch the other day, and the dogs got into it. Thank goodness they didn’t get any chocolate. You know, you haven’t lived until you’ve tried to catch a Jack Russell and wrestle a roll of Smartees away from her, lol. |

That’s hilarious, Kelly. I always love it when they get a hold of a small, hard piece of candy and clamp their jaws shut. You might as well just give up. I usually just try to get the wrapper off and let them have it when it is a small piece like that. It isn’t worth the trauma of taking it away. Sometimes they can be distracted with a dog treat, but not usually. We have one little mini doxie who loves anything sour. |

It wasn’t so much getting the roll of Smartees out of her mouth as actually catching her. Sophie is a lot smaller than I am, and she can dart under furniture, etc., places I can’t go. I finally flushed her into the living room and cornered her on the couch, lol. |

Hi Kelly and Lori - I must say I had a visual reading this thread and it gave me a much needed good laugh! Lori it is so sad to read of an accident like that - people really need to always remember to take extra precautions to keep their pets safe when needed. Here I put up a baby gate to keep my 3 little guys from getting to the front door. The funny thing was none of the cats would jump over it - they just sat their waiting to be noticed when they wanted to get to the other side…... |

Hi Everyone, This was a funny thread and a good read! Terry, I like your idea of the baby gate. I was thinking of getting one for keeping the girls out of the kitchen (instead of away from the front door). The girls like to wander in there sometimes to see if anything has dropped on the floor from when we cooked dinner. I sweep and all, but sometimes there are crumbs left behind. Was the baby gate expensive? |
