Best toy for super chewers?

Okay, I know I can’t be the only person on this forum who has dogs with super chewing abilities. I’m looking for your suggestions about which toys hold up the best. My JRTs tend to treat their toys like food, and nothing lasts for very long. A doggie tennis ball is shot in a single day and rawhides don’t last much longer. So, send me your suggestions. Maybe there’s something out there that I haven’t tried.

Hi Kelly,

Thank you for this post.  I have a dog that is just like your JRTs.  He loves chewing up tennis balls.  There are a lot of really cute stuffed toys for dogs, but they would last one day in out house.  I am looking forward to seeing everyone’s suggestions.

Hi Jackie,

Would you believe my dog who loves to chew does not like the Champion toys.  I have tried different sizes and shapes and no luck.  He just tore apart a dog frisbee that he has actually had for awhile.  He took out the rubber ring inside.  Luckily he only chews his toys and nothing else in the house.  grin

Hi Kelly and Christine, I have a similar problem with my two, but one toy that really does seem to last is the Chompion dog toy- it’s super durable and it has all these little “teeth” kind of things on it that my little one just loves (she flips it up into the air, barks at it, and everything!). They come in different sizes (small-large) and in all colors.

I buy them some plush toys (mostly because they’re cute- not because they last!), but I always include at least one Chompion because I know it’ll be there for a while.

Hi Kelly,

Believe it or not, we have a little mini dachshund that simply destroys every toy we give her. We bought an “indestructible” toy and she tore it up in ten minutes. One that we have found that lasts pretty well is the Kong. However, when we are done playing with her we put up that toy and give her a bone to gnaw on. That seems to help with her chewing a little.

Hi Lori,

Yes, I think the Kong is better than most “indestrictible” toys, but my girls did manage to much it down. It was a red rubber Kong, and I know they’re making a black rubber model that is supposed to be even tougher. Maybe we’ll have to try that. Anyone out there have any experience with black rubber Kongs? I’d love to know if they’re really that much stronger than the red ones.

Hi Kelly and Christine,

No unfortunately, I never tried the black Kong toy, but I have used the one that hides the treats in it. Have you tried that one? I know that it entertains the girls for a while and even though they paw and chew on it, it still lasts. Maybe that would be another good option?

Hi Jackie,

That sounds like the Kong we had. It was red and had the hole in the middle to stuff with treats. They literally took turns munching it down from the small end which was the easiest one to fit in their mouths. I swear they are like little sharks when they decide to chew something up. I’m just thankful that Sophie and Delilah have never had the urge to go after household items the way Nealie did as a pup and still does on rare occasion now.
