What Breed Was Your First Dog?

I was sitting here thinking about my first dog. He was a German Shepherd/Collie mix and was an absolutely wonderful dog for a child. He was protective, but gentle. I then got a Golden Retriever for my girls for their first dog. Again, she has been a wonderful dog. Gentle and loving. What breed was your first dog? Do you remember? Sometimes the Heinz 57’s seem to be the best type of dogs for kids too.

Hi Lori, wow that takes me back. My very first dog was a little toy Cockapoo named Penelope, but we called her Penny for short. She was my “back yard buddy” and we’d play together for hours. She was a good dog, but she developed a habit of escaping from our yard, so my parents ended up giving her away to my older sister’s mother-in-law where she finished out a long and happy life.

My first dog was a Peek-a-poo when I was pretty little. Half Poodle and half Pekingese. His name was Candy. He was so cute. smile He was the only white one in the litter (the rest were black). Someone stole him right out of our backyard. :( I was so bummed. I’d stand out in the driveway and call him hoping he’d come home.

I grew up with Dalmatians.  First we had Dottie and Lady.  Lady was very aggressive and bit our cousin, so my parents gave her away.  Dottie, we had for most of my childhood.  When I moved out and got my own dog, I again got a Dalmatian named Seaspot.  Dalmatians have a lot of energy and need a lot of exercise, but they are the most loving dogs.

That question really brought back so many fond memories to me. The very first dog I remember was a big brown dog when I was very young. I seem to think he resembled Clifford the Red Dog in looks. His name was Tubby. The first dog I really remember was a black and white cocker spaniel we adopted from a shelter when I was a young child. She was about 15 years old when my parents adopted her and I remember she was very afraid of rain - even a light shower. We had her for several years and she was a great friend.

Terry, your first dog sounded adorable! How great is it that he looked like Clifford (I loved Clifford!)? That’s like every kid’s dream come true! And I’m glad that you were able to have the cocker spaniel for all those years too.

I wish I could have had a dog when I was little like the rest of you :- ( I used to bring dogs home all the time, but my dad was very firm in his belief that dogs belong outside. We lived in an apartment so I could never have one).

That all changed when I grew up though, and my first (and still here) was/is a German Shep/Husky mix.  I’ve gotten another one since her, but Pharrah, aka, “The Poo Poo” will always be the first! The funny thing is, after all those years, my dad now treats Pharrah like she’s his grandchild :-)
