Thanksgiving is drawing near, so I thought we could all share ideas on ways to let our pets share in the leftovers. I know my girls just know they are going to get a treat when they smell the aroma of a turkey cooking in my oven. We don’t feed them table scraps because we don’t want to turn them into mooches, but they do get a taste of turkey at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

This year, I think I’m going to buy an extra large turkey and try out Wendy Nan Rees’ recipe for Turkey Loaf for Dogs. She says you can use leftover turkey to make it.

So, are the rest you going to share some turkey with your dog this holiday? Do you just give it to them straight off the plate, or do you have a great turkey treat recipe you can share?

Hi all,

A friend of mine lost her little dog a couple of years ago, because he ran out when some trick or treaters came to the door and got hit by a car. I just wanted to remind everyone that it is probably best to put dogs away in another room or at the very least have a leash on them while trick or treaters are visiting and also to keep any chocolate up as it is very toxic to dogs. Everyone have a safe and Happy Halloween!

I was wondering what kind of food all of you are currently feeding your dogs? Commercial kibble, canned food, home cooking, etc? If you’re feeding commercial food, what brand, and do you think your dog is doing well on it? if you’re feeding a home cooked diet, how’s that working out for you?

What do you think. Do we really need to give our dogs vitamins? My thinking is that if I’m feeding a high quality kibble, it already provides balanced nutrition. So, why would my dog need vitamins on top of that?

We’ve been talking a lot on the forum about which dog food is best, so I’m wondering what you all give your dogs for snacks or treats? Are we all as selective about our pets’ snack foods as we are about their daily diet?

I used to give my dogs a lot of store-bought treats years ago. These days, we usually offer the girls carrot slices.

Although I have never given any of my dogs or cats avacadoes - I had no idea it was bad for them. I have heard of people giving it to their dogs because it supposedly makes their coats shiny. They contain something called persain that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, fluid buildup around the heart and even death in certain cases.

Oh - avocadoes should also be avoided by humans if they are on blood thinners.

I had to call the place where I get my dogs food delivered from to suspend deliveries until after we move. The lady I spoke with told me about some new dog foods that they are carrying that she says all the people there now feed their dogs.

One is called Sojos Europa and it is a dehydrated food with no grains that may cause allergies. It has veggies and lots of good stuff. You add your own protein-whatever you want, eggs, yogurt, meat-and it’s supposed to be really great for the dogs. She said she was skeptical at first but her dogs love it and are healthier for it.

I told her about my itchy dogs and she said that dried dog foods actually cause dogs to itch because they are not properly digested. Therefore, the dog cannot absorb all the nutrients it needs and also has to try to deal with the undigested food, which causes allergies. That’s why they itch. She explained it better than I did,; I just don’t remember it all.

Anyhow, it looks pretty pricey at $50 for an 8 ounce bag, but it lasts for 6 weeks according to her (with her dogs, one over 100 lbs., one about 20 lbs). So considering how long it lasts, it may not be so bad since currently we pay $50 to $60 every two weeks.

She also said they have their own brand which is similar but includes the protein (turkey). She uses both. You just rehydrate it in some water over night and feed as usual.

Has anyone else tried any type of dehydrated foods? I think after we move I may give it a try. If it will help my dogs’ skin issues it will be worth it.
