Gizmo is 10 years old (9 pound Japanese Chin) and since he was tiny (6 weeks) his tongue stuck out of his mouth a little. At around 1 year he had to have several teeth removed that were impacted and his tongue was a little further out.

Ok - now my vet at the time suggested having his tongue cropped or getting him false teeth.
I defiantly wasn’t having his tongue cut and I couldn’t get him false teeth.
His tongue doesn’t bother him but I still hear from a few people that I should have had it cut when he was young.

I was wondering what everyone thought about this?

My little dog has awful breath. The vet says no teeth are rotted, but my little dog is too mean to easily get her teeth professionally cleaned. For now, the vet is just “keeping an eye on things in her mouth”. He would have to put her under to clean her teeth and she is very small so there are dangers with the anesthesia. Basically, we will probably have to put her out and clean them soon, but for now we are going to wait.

I do brush her teeth at least once a week. Anyone else have other techniques they use to help reduce bad breath or remove tartar build up? She will only allow me to brush her teeth, clip her nails, etc. She pretty much hates everyone else in the world if they try to restrain her in any way. She isn’t mean just to be petted or such, but if you try to pick her up, she loses it. She tries to eat the vet every time I take her in for vaccinations. He has to muzzle her and she still almost gets him every time.

Yes, she’s a bit insane, but I love her. LOL

Okay, I posted about Tango and his tummy troubles. He is doing just fine now. We were thinking it was a combination of stress from the move and my husband being gone as well as him not having his usual food. He was eating a mix of Pedigree and Canidae because we were waiting for his food to be delivered.

Now that he is just eating Canidea again and Daddy’s home, he is back to normal.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is Lila is now sick. She has had diarrhea and been throwing up for the last couple of days now. A few accidents to clean up but she has mostly been going to the door if she needs to go out. I was up with her all night and I am ready to collapse today. I got up to go to the bathroom and when I came out she was pacing like she wanted to go out. I started heading for the door and saw on the carpet a large spot of blood. Only blood; no diarrhea. I let her outside and saw her back end was all bloody.

She won’t eat at all today after throwing up numerous times yesterday. She is laying down again but she actually smells sick. Her symptoms remind me of parvo, but she is an eight year old dog who never goes anywhere. I’m wondering if the previous owners had a dog with parvo? Anyhow, I know she needs to go to a vet but I am broke until payday. I may call and see what they suggest. I haven’t seen a vet since we moved here so they aren’t likely to work with someone they don’t know.

I’m getting a little panicked. Do you think it could actually be parvo at her age? I’m feeling sick still myself and all this is just getting to be more than I can handle. And I still have work to finish. I’d sure appreciate any ideas that I may not have thought of.

Hi Everybody,

I just read a piece about the new dog flu that’s going around (H3N8) and I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about this new flu or if their vet’s have told them anything about it. There’s a piece in the New York Times about it, as well as an Q&A section.

Do you think this is anything to worry about? Should we consider a vaccine? I’m curious to hear what everyone thinks/feels about this.

Once again, this isn’t an illness. I didn’t see a good place to put this, so here is the spot. (Maybe we need a general discussion folder)

My Dogue de Bordeaux has issues. One of them is that I don’t think her nails have ever been trimmed. The people who had her before just had no clue what to do with a dog. I’d tell you the condition she was in when she was surrendered, but I’ll just say that I’m thankful she was surrendered or she probably would be dead.

Anyhow, I had been taking her to the vet to trim her nails because I always worry that I’m hurting her. I’m thinking I may just get a Dremmel to do it myself and save some money. Even with the vet doing it, they are really long.

If I do it regularly, will I be able to get her nails to the length they should be eventually? How often could I trim them safely? I know it has to hurt her feet to walk so I really want to get them short like they should be, but I realize it will take some time to get to that point.

If we could walk her, that would help. She won’t walk outside. Our patio is her “potty” and we just keep it cleaned up. I daily walk would be a huge help in keeping her nails trimmed.

My dogs are out of flea and tick treatments as of last month. So we need somthing to put on them this month. We have no reason to take them to the vet but we will in a few months (the vet is far, its takes lots of planning and Dh has to be late for work, etc).

We use Front line but we are out. What kind do you use? where do you get it and how can I get some (just for the next couple of months until they go back to the vet). I was going to ask the vet tech on here but maybe this will answer my question.
