My adopted dog tested positive for heart worms.

My 3 year old Doberman tested positive for heart worms and was treated. She is now on Heartguard, but sometimes she coughs and gags. Should I be worried?

I'm so sorry that your dog is having such a hard time! Good luck to you and come back and let us know how it's going? Wishing the best for you and your pup.

Hi Janna,

I don't want to panic you, but I do believe you should let your vet know what's happening right away. The treatment for heartworm is very hard on a dog, and some dogs don't survive it. Since your dog didn't have the coughing and gagging previously, it's definitely worth having your vet examine your dog and perhaps draw more blood to check for a reinfestation, as well as any possible damage to your dog's heart and lungs. Hopefully there's nothing serious going on, but it's always better to be safe than sorry after a dog goes through such a traumatic health crisis.
